Computer, TV & Electronics Recycling Program

The City of Madison has a new recycling program for computers, TVs and other electronic equipment. WE WILL NO LONGER COLLECT COMPUTER MONITORS, CPUs, LAPTOPS, AND TELEVISIONS AT THE CURB. In the past, these items were dumped in a landfill after they were collected curbside.

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?
Madison residents must now bring their computer monitors, laptops, TVs, and computer CPUs to one of our two full service drop off sites for recycling. The sites are located at 1501 W. Badger Rd and 4602 Sycamore Av.

IS THERE A FEE FOR THIS PROGRAM?
There is no fee for:
* Cables
* Cameras
* Cell Phones
* DVD Players
* Ink Jet Cartridges
* Keyboards
* Miscellaneous Computer Parts
* Mouse
* Printers
* Scanners
* Stereo components
* Telephones
* Typewriters
* VCRs
* Video Game Consoles

There will be a $10 sticker charge for Monitors, Laptops, CPUs and Televisions. (Note: Large console TVs will still be collected at the curb. The $10 fee will apply.) Stickers for this program are available at the outlets listed below.

WHY IS THIS PROGRAM IMPORTANT?
The most important reason for recycling old computers, TVs, and consumer electronics is to keep toxic materials out of the landfill. These items contain lead, mercury, cadmium, and cancer causing flame-retardants. We must keep these materials out of the landfill to protect our groundwater. Another reason to recycle these items is to extend the life of our landfill. The Dane County Landfill has about eight more years of capacity remaining and opening a new landfill is very expensive. Electronic waste is the fastest growing segment of our waste stream. Since most of the components in these materials can be recycled or reused it makes sense to get them recycled.

If you have questions about the program please visit the website or call the City Recycling Office.
